Turmeric Liquid Gold

The wonders of Turmeric

Turmeric has been used for centuries and over this time the health benefits of this spice have been revealing themselves.

Turmeric is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Try to cut out sugar while you have signs and symptoms of inflammation as a diet high in sugar is inflammation-promoting and should be consumed in a controlled manner.

It’s the yellow or orange pigment in the spice known as curcumin that holds the anti-inflammatory effects. It can help manage stress and inflammation in the body. It is said to guard against cancer, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease and can help relieve symptoms of inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis.

Here are a few ways of how to include this amazing spice into your diet.

Drink it:

This liquid gold is used as a traditional herbal medicine to treat stomach issues, inflammation, colds and aids circulation.

Drink cold:
4cm knob fresh turmeric
½ Lime or Lemon
1 Tsp Honey
1 cup of filtered water
Place all ingredients into a blender and mix.

You can always experiment with the amount of turmeric you use and slowly add more when your taste buds get used it.

I like to use grapefruit with my turmeric for a different taste and amazing colour

Here I blended a knob of turmeric with 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed grapefruit.

Or use a lemon with your Turmeric.

Drink Hot:

Pour boiling water into a teapot
Add 1 teaspoon of chopped fresh turmeric
Small knob fresh ginger depending on how spicy you like your tea.
5-10 Fresh mint leaves
Steep for 5 minutes
Pour.
You can add a little honey to taste if you wish.

Cook with it:

A dash of turmeric in your nightly meal is a simple way to increase your intake. Throw it in with coriander, cumin, paprika and mustard seeds for an Indian-inspired dish, or try it as a marinade with honey and a splash of coconut oil on tempeh or tofu.

Lentil Dhal

Dress it:

Turmeric is an amazing addition to a delicious salad dressing. It instantly adds zing and transforms a bowl of lettuce into a taste sensation.

Apple cider turmeric Vinaigrette:
Mix 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup olive, 1 tablespoon of honey, 2 tablespoons of grated turmeric and a handful of sesame seeds in a jar and shake, shake, shake. Drizzle over fresh vegetables and salad greens.

Take it:
This potent natural anti-inflammatory works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects. You can buy these in tablet form from any health food shop, or just blend it from the root and drink it down.

Colour it:

When I worked as a child carer I would use natural food dyes to colour the play dough and Turmeric makes a very cool yellow dough.
Turmeric is widely used in India and is a popular colour used in the Holi which is a religious spring festival celebrated by Hindus

Precautions :
Turmeric in food and in its natural state is considered safe, it is when using Turmeric supplements that you need to contact your health care provider for advice if you taking other medications or pregnant.

  3. I have used turmeric powder on morning cereals for several years along with a generally healthy veg/wholefood diet. Four months ago in response to a lot of stress (I believe) I developed flushing of the face and redness on the upper chest and neck. Doctors have prescribed steroidal cream, and another doc anti histamine cream. I don`t favour either and will try increasing my turmeric intake to see what happens - along with more relaxation and antistress methods.
